Funding

Are you conducting research connected to the themes of inclusive language use or developing inclusive language standards? The Canadian Word Centre is pleased to offer flexible research supports to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as UBC faculty, who are conducting original, collaborative, or applied research aligning with our project’s goals.

Whether you are working towards writing your thesis, conducting fieldwork, developing public-facing outputs, or drafting a publication, we invite you to join our expanding interdisciplinary community and take advantage of the opportunities below.

Types of Support Available

Student Funding (overall budget over two years: $25,000)

We are pleased to offer funding through the Cluster Grant to students conducting research related to the theme of inclusive language use and standard development. If you are a current undergraduate or graduate student at UBC, you are eligible to apply for small grants to support your work. Funding is available for a range of needs, including:

Research & Development:

  • Up to $500 fund to purchase books, equipment, or software necessary for conducting research relevant to the Cluster theme.
  • Up to $500 fund to support participant honoraria or transcription services for one’s research project on inclusive language use or standard development.

Travel & Training

  • Up to $500 travel fund to present related research at academic conference relevant to the Cluster theme.
  • Up to $500 fund for workshop or training attendance that is relevant to cluster theme.

Knowledge Dissemination

  • Up to $1000 to support the development of public-facing research projects (ex: translating research findings into podcasts, zines, video essays, digital or in-person exhibitions, etc.) exploring inclusive language use or standard development.

Faculty Funding

Faculty members are welcome to claim $2000 for a Faculty Club Meeting presentation against the Cluster Grant, a bursary that can be extended to $5000 under special circumstances to support research travel and guest invitations. The budget for the 2026 academic year is $25,000.

  • All Faculty Club members are invited to present their area of research on the topic of Inclusive Language Standards or Inclusive Language Use.
  • Alongside the Faculty Club presentations, we ask that a 2000-word summary of your research’s main problems and findings be shared so that it may be included in a cross-linguistic article on the concept of “inclusive standards”.

How to apply

Interested students can submit their applications via the form below. Please state your project title and goals, in a 300-500 word account, identifying what the funds sought for would enable you to do. We intend to answer within 14 days.
